Nancy Moody Nichols

Longtime Andrews resident Nancy Moody Nichols, 90, passed peacefully Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018. She was greeted in heaven by her husband of 66 years, Lee Burrus Nichols Jr.

Mrs. Nichols was born Nancy Aileen Moody to the late Smith and Grace Norris Moody of Union Point, Ga., on March 3, 1927. She was the sixth of eight children in the Moody family.

A graduate of Villa Rica High School in Villa Rica, Ga., she attended Mount Saint Agnes College in Baltimore and graduated with an RN in nursing from St. Joseph’s Infirmary School of Nursing in Atlanta in 1947.

Nancy met her future husband, Lee, by an introduction from Lee’s aunt, Ann Candler Anders, who was a teacher at the high school. Lee grew up in Andrews and had family in Villa Rica.

After Lee served in the Army during World War II, the couple was married two days after Nancy graduated from nursing school in 1947. Nancy worked at Mary Elizabeth Hospital in Raleigh while Lee resumed his education at N.C. State University. After graduation, the couple lived in McKeesport, Penn., Nashville, Tenn., and Carrollton, Ga. Lee was an industrial engineer, while Nancy became a stay-at-home mother.

The family moved to Andrews in 1957 to take over Nichols Department Store, the family business started by Lee “Teddy” Nichols in 1927. Lee and Nancy were always active in Andrews Presbyterian Church and various community functions. After retiring in 1984, they moved to Marvin in 2002 to be with son Steve and his wife, Iris. They were members of Banks Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Nichols is survived by two sons, Lee Burrus Nichols III and wife Pam of Edmond, Okla., and Carl Steven Nichols and wife Iris of Marvin. She has four grandchildren, Richard L. Nichols, Jennifer N. Santee, Malinda N. Daniel and Robert W. Nichols. There are seven (soon to be eight) great-grandchildren. Nancy also is survived by one brother, Bobby Moody of Clarksville, Tenn.

A family memorial service is planned for spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy’s honor to Andrews Presbyterian Church PO Box 440, Andrews, NC 28901.
