UPDATE: Two killed in Topton car crash
A two-vehicle head-on collision Wednesday morning took the lives of two Murphy residents.
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday near Brady Curve on U.S. 19 in Topton. N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Wilson said 31-year-old Murphy resident Mikael Kaser was riding without a seat belt in the passenger seat of a 2006 Honda CRV driven by Meghan Blaylock, 20, of Murphy.
The Honda was traveling westbound on U.S. 19 in the eastbound lane. Carver Wilson, 57, of Andrews, was driving east on U.S. 19 in a 2011 Ford Expedition. Wilson said the Ford driver swerved out of the way to miss the oncoming Honda, but the two vehicles crashed head-on.
Kaser died at the scene. Blaylock was seriously injured and flown to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., before passing away from her injuries later Wednesday.
Wilson was taken to Murphy Medical Center in Peachtree for minor cuts and scrapes from the collision. The wreck is still under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
It marks the second straight winter for a fatal car crash on U.S. 19 in Topton. Lloyd Kyle Johnson, 23, of Robbinsville died in a crash on Dec. 4, 2015, that was blamed on black ice.
